It is actually the fifth of the 10 commandments God gave to the Israelite s and humankind through Moses in the wilderness after coming out of Egypt. One important point to note is that it is the only commandment that has a promise attached to it!!! In full,it states "honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you"(Exodus 20:12). Did i hear someone say wholesome promise?i totally agree with you.
I believe the promise is easy to understand but the condition for the promise is what i am actually blabbing sorry blogging about and i want to ask; who is my father and my mother? I will want to look at this question from two viewpoints
- Actual father and mother and any other person older than you
- Anyone who gives you a headstart in life.
- Actual father and mother and any other person older than you: I mean your parents and any other person older than you should be honored and respected, even when they don't deserve it and especially when they do not deserve it. I agree with you that some parents and elders do not deserve to be honored but i also want you to know that it is not your place or prerogative to reward them for there actions. So either they deserve it or not, honor and respect them because it is the right thing to do and also because someone who will be in your present position is watching your present actions.
- Anyone who gives you a head start in life: I want to say that the consequence of dishonor to this group of people is very grave and serious, physically and spiritually. Any person that gives you a head start in life is any person that gives you an opportunity to be someone or "lifts you up" from one level to a higher one and this person or people deserve to be honored. Higher level could be your first job or a better job, a connection to someone,a teacher or a mentor. The person could be anything to you. He or she might be older or younger, richer or even poorer, but whatever the status, the person should be honored both in his presence and more so behind his back. Dishonor to such a person for whatever reason can be likened to betrayal, it puts you at odds with the person and other people see you as an unreliable person that cannot be trusted.
You are right. The only law that has a promise attached to it is the one that mandates us to honor our parents. And we should respect those older than us and even those younger than us to create a peaceful world. Thanks for sharing this. Cheers
